What’s Changed from ChargePoint’s CT4000 to the new CP6000?

Brian Bilbo, Senior Director of Business Development at National Car Charging

When it comes to EV charging, technology is moving fast — and for good reason. Reliability, speed, and flexibility matter more than ever.

We sat down with Brian Bilbo, Senior Director of Business Development at National Car Charging (NCC), to talk about how the new ChargePoint CP6000 stacks up against its predecessor, the CT4000, and what these changes really mean for the people installing, maintaining, and relying on chargers every day.

Question: Brian, for folks who already know the ChargePoint CT4000, what’s new about the CP6000?

Brian: The big story is flexibility. The CT4000 is a solid unit and continues to be a great charger — dependable, simple, a real workhorse — but it was built in a time when charging expectations were different.

The CP6000 takes all the lessons learned from the field and reimagines the design for the long haul.

It’s modular, which means if something goes wrong — a handle, cable, or even a screen — you can replace that part in the field instead of having to replace large sections of the overall unit. That’s a massive shift in uptime and cost of ownership.

Q: Let’s dig into that modular design. Why does it matter so much?

Brian: Picture having a charger in your fleet yard or parking garage. It’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do… until someone backs into it.

With the CT4000, that little accident usually means replacing the entire head unit — not just the damaged piece. It’s fixable, sure, but it’s not cheap. A new head can run into the thousands once you factor in parts, labor, and downtime.

The CP6000 completely changes that. Instead of swapping out the head unit, you just replace what’s broken — a cable, handle, or even the screen. It means easier fixes and less costs.

It’s modular by design, which means you’re spending less time repairing and more time charging. And that’s what matters most to fleets and operators — affordably keeping the power flowing.

Q: One of the things people keep asking about is connectors. What happens when half your drivers have Teslas and the rest don’t?

Brian: That’s where the OmniPort cable system comes in — and it’s brilliant. Each port automatically dispenses the right connector for the car that plugs in. If it’s a Tesla, it gives you a NACS connector. If it’s another EV, you get J1772.

No extra adapters needed. Just plug in and charge.

Q: How about power options — what are we looking at for the CP6000?

Brian: You’ve got choices. The CP6000 comes in 50-amp or 80-amp models, and both can be derated to match your site’s capacity. That’s huge because not every building or parking structure can handle the same load.

To put that into perspective:

  • The 50A model adds roughly 45 miles of range/hour.

  • The 80A model? About 75 miles per hour.

So whether you’re charging overnight fleets or offering public charging during the workday, there’s flexibility baked right in.

Q: And for the people who are still new to this —what do you want them to understand about these chargers?

Brian: First off, don’t overthink it. Charging doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is investing in smart, modular, and solid hardware that can evolve with your needs.

We meet a lot of folks who don’t know the difference between a 50A and 80A station — and that’s okay. That’s what we’re here for. We want to make sure you’re not just buying a charger; you’re building a reliable, scalable charging ecosystem that’s ready for the future.

Q: What does National Car Charging provide that others don't?

Brian: Honestly? Confidence. A lot of companies can sell you a charger — but NCC makes sure it works for the long haul.

We’re not just a distributor; we’re a full-service partner and we’ve been doing this a long time — over 14 years. We help customers from start to finish — design, procurement, installation, and maintenance — all through one trusted team.

We’ve got nationwide coverage, cooperative and state buying contracts to simplify purchasing, and a decade of experience installing tens of thousands of chargers across the country.

We also don’t disappear after the sale. We stick around to make sure everything runs smoothly — and that’s what sets us apart.
