Why I Give My Team Election Day Off.
Today, NCC is closed. Not because business is slow, the chargers stopped charging, or we're sneaking in an extra vacation day.
It's Election Day. And we're giving everyone the day off to get involved.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Anyone who knows me knows I have opinions. Plenty of them. And I've never been particularly shy about sharing them. I've knocked on doors, advocated for causes I believe in, and spent more than a few hours talking with elected officials. Some might even argue I enjoy a good political debate a little too much.
But here's the thing. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. In fact, I'd be pretty surprised if they did!
What I do believe is that democracy works better when more people show up.
That's why we give everyone at NCC Election Day off. Not just an hour or two to squeeze in a vote between meetings, but the whole day. Vote. Work the polls. Volunteer. Help a neighbor. Get involved in whatever way matters to you.
It’s your day. Your voice. Your choice.
We're in good company, too. Patagonia has been doing this for years, and I love seeing other businesses make civic participation a priority. You don't have to be a big corporation to make a difference.
When I started NCC 15 years ago, I was focused on building a business, not establishing Election Day traditions. But one of the best parts of running a company is getting to build a workplace that reflects what you believe in.
And sometimes, that means turning off the office lights for a day.
We've accomplished a lot at NCC, and I'm proud of every bit of it. But giving our team the freedom to participate in something bigger than our business? That ranks pretty high on my list.
So here's to showing up, speaking up, and getting involved!
See you tomorrow. We've got chargers to sell. ⚡
